Crosswalk urgently needed On Canner St &Loomis Place - Very very busy intersection which is near two schools and Celentano and Foote as well as the Divinity School. Please address asap.
Not only the two schools mentioned but two Yale affiliated child care programs as well as many walking from Prospect area to Worthington Hooker on Livingston/Canner.
I asked Alder Williams to file this request, and am grateful to her for her quick action! Between two day care centers (one in the YDS apartments one in the Whitehall apartments), two grade schools, three apartment complexes (Whitehall, Ivy Manor, and YDS), and Yale Divinity School (plus its community garden), there is a lot of foot traffic here. My wife and I both live and work here, and very much support this new crosswalk!
This is not an easy road to cross by myself (and with my piles of books). I can only imagine what it must be like with small children. It's not only busy (not just at the start of day and end of day either), it's on a steep incline with cars parallel parking on both sides.
I one hundred percent agree. Cars barrel up and down Canner without looking for pedestrians of any size. I make this crossing at least twice a day and feel like I am taking my life in my hands each time. A crosswalk with light indicators like the one on Prospect near the new Yale residential buildings would be ideal.
Thank you! I want to bring to your attention that the Whitehall apartments, home to the Edith Jackson day care center across Canner from the Celentano school, have just installed a security arm on the parking lot, restricting access to residents. I assume that this means many of the parents who use the daycare center will no longer be able to enter the parking lot, and will now park on the street to drop off and pick up their children. This will likely lead to a dramatic increase in both (young) pedestrian and vehicle traffic on this block, increasing the need for a crosswalk even more.
Child care staff and parents have card access to the parking lot for drop off and pick up so there should not be more street parking than already exists.
However, the need for a crosswalk at Canner and St Ronan is badly needed for pedestrians walking up and down Canner Street.
Thank you, Livingston! (This raises some other questions about the new security arm... but are irrelevant to the question of a crosswalk. Much obliged for this helpful information!)
