i know exactly what you are talking about the ones at the intersection of the credit union bank on 2nd are the worst ever! Feels like im driving on a rail road, i do my best to avoid the right side on that road as that is the worst...i can just hear my poor shocks and suspension joints screaming in pain...i do my best to avoid driving down 2nd...they need to repair ALL intersewctions on 2nd there both horrible....i dont c why they didnt do it wile they did the road...

I agree...it's worse than corduroy gravel road sometimes.

I can't remember when those pads were poured (musta been at least 15 years ago, since I think I had my license by then), but I do remember hearing that the reasoning behind it was because we have so many semis and traffic driving on 2nd Ave and 15th St, the concrete was better able to withstand the combined weight of semi trucks and cars without sinking (they likened it to a freeway in a major city), and it was supposed to cut down on maintenance costs for the exact same reason.

Unfortunately, it seems like 'cutting down' on costs must have meant 'cutting out' the costs, since I can't recall ever seeing maintenance being done on those since.

These were put in a long time ago, like at least 15 years, and before that the road had to be replaced every year, so the fact that no maintenance has been needed until now is pretty darn good and a wise use of taxpayers money.

Try not to whine and complain to much when the construction actually takes place and you have to detour a block and two minutes out of your way ok?

They were a great idea, lasted way longer than pavement but do need reconstruction. the problem with concrete is they can't repair it really, just hammer out and replace it. Notice the ruts aren't in it like they are on 15th across 2nd ave?

Yes, I recognize the wisdom in using the concrete pavement in those parts, just look at the turn onto 15th going west from 2nd Ave, the asphalt is hammered down till you can see the sensor cables for the traffic lights. Suffice it to say, the concrete has done it's job, protected the intersection, saved the city tonnes of money, but now they're beginning to show their age, and should be repaired. unfortunately, due to it's being concrete, repairs are complicated and expensive...but it's time.

I have never understood how and why our roads are so terrible up here? Are they being done on the cheap and corners cut? Cross the Can/USA border, say down 35 at Oungre. It's in the middle of no where North Dakota and that road is like glass! The weather conditions are the same so you can't use that. Also the USA interstate highways are conrete, carry 10,000 times the vehicles of all weights travelling at high speeds and they last years! Yet we can't seem to pour a patch of concrete that wont dissintegrate after seven year!

They desperatly need to be replaced ASAP. Wont be pretty at a major intersection like those, but needs to be done. I hope they look at how fast the independant contractors paved 2nd avenue!

Our weather is one factor as to why our streets don't last, other factors include the maximum weight allowed to be hauled and how many heavy vehicals are travelling over a road. In the end PA has a lot of heavey vehicals travelling over second avenue and therefor it wears out the road. The concrete slowed down the process but it still eventualy needs repairs and now they are going to be done.

The City is working to repair the concrete pads. Excellent job, can't wait to drive thru a smooth intersection!
