I thought I'd read MONTHS ago that the city knew it would have to adjust the lights' timing for the road diet to work. But I've seen none of the sensors that measure traffic, no change to the problem reported.

The poster above notes that drivers are using alternate streets, but it's even worse: Siri & Google Maps now often recommend drivers bypass the afternoon commute backup from MacArthur onto 580 Eastbound by getting to Elwood, turning down Grand, then getting onto 580 at the Lakeshore onramp. Part of the Elwood traffic backup is therefore itself a reaction to the slowdown of Grand Ave traffic from this light!

At the last Grand Lake Neighbors meeting (July 19, 2017) I took these notes. I will follow up.

- The following projects are in the queue: a) left turn arrow from Grand to Mandana is in design, implementation ECD mid 2018. b) The lights at Grand and Mandana and Grand and Elwood will be added to the same controller, making it easier to manage the timing and consequent traffic backups in that area. ECD mid 2018. c) The left hand turn 'pocket' into STAR pizza is under review and may be modified in some TBD manner. d) Further study is being done on traffic patterns, collisions, and related issues on Grand Avenue due to the recent road diet. Conclusions due 4Q 2017.

Thanks Hugs! Those all sounds like great initiatives. I'm super glad to hear there's work ongoing to improve this intersection. I'm still hoping that in the meantime, rather than waiting a year for Grand and Elwood to be added to the same controller, we can just get the light timing at the Elwood / Grand intersection to be extended for Grand. It might not alleviate all the problems, but it would ease the backup until the longer term projects are completed.

the Elwood signal is set to always serve pedestrians during daytime even if the button is NOT pushed; due to the high volume of pedestrians in the area. Same goes for signal for ped crossing only mid block towards Grand Lake Theater. This causes the Elwood traffic to have maximum pedestrian time to cross, with or without cars or people present...all the while cars on Grand are waiting for nobody.

The bike lane on Grand between Mandana and the next street (name?) where the coffee mill is - also causes this back up! People turning from Mandana onto Grand only use the one lane - then once it passes the coffee Mill it opens up into 2 lanes. The bike lane only lane should end at the Start vs continuing for that short block.
